Another year is upon us, and so should be another list of great books.
Anyone got a new one to recommend (as in, one that came out this year)?
I’ll kick off the thread with this recommendation:
THE UNNAMED by Joshua Ferris. This is one of those books I just tore through, and now I’m sad that it’s over. It’s about a lawyer named Tim Farnesworth who has an “unnamed” illness where he just gets up and starts walking, for miles and miles, until he eventually collapses from exhaustion. This illness serves as the narrative’s axis point; with each bout of compulsive walking comes a revelation about Tim’s life — flaws in his marriage, his professional existence, etc. — which degenerates further and further as the book progresses.

Ferris’s debut, THEN WE CAME TO THE END, was nominated for a National Book Award. This guy can f**king write. And he’s certainly eluded the sophomore jinx here.

“Broken Glass Park” by Alina Bronsky. It's about a 17-year-old Russian girl named Sascha who lives in Germany. Her stepfather kills her mother, and is sent ot prison. But Sascha is determined to exact further vengeance.
Just a great story -- Bronky's debut novel, no less -- of a girl’s struggle against self and the greater world. And it caps off with an eye-popping ending. Check it out:

PBG’s very own Greg Ippolito just received quite a nod from Liz Babineaux at BNF: Best New Fiction. His debut novel, ZERO STATION, was just named “Best New Novel of 2010 (So Far)”!

Yeah, Liz Babineaux is loving you, man…
From BEST NEW FICTION:
“Ippolito’s style harkens to Camus (spare and existential), with a hint of Hornby (the music references, mostly), and a healthy dose of Richard Yates (gut-wrenching honesty).”

From THE TOP 3 BEST NEW FICTION NOVELS OF 2010 (SO FAR):
“…the Gen Xer's Catcher In The Rye. (The ending just floored me, and lingered in my mind for days after.)”
